Mouth Sores from Chemotherapy

The side effects of chemotherapy can be emotionally uncomfortable and physically draining. When it comes to oral care during chemotherapy, alcohol-free toothpaste and mouth rinse products from Dental Herb Company provide soothing relief from mouth sores, help rebuild damaged tissue, and create an inhospitable environment for bacterial growth. Oral sores from chemotherapy result from chemo’s efficacy in killing rapidly dividing cells throughout the body. While beneficial when it comes to destroying cancer cells, this process can wreak havoc on cells lining the mouth. Once cells are damaged and natural immunity is weakened, the risk of developing painful oral sores increases substantially.

Mouth sores from chemo can appear on any of the soft tissues that line the mouth, as well as on the lips, tongue and esophagus. In severe cases they can impair an individual’s ability to eat, talk, swallow and breathe. The good news is there are some simple steps patients can take to help avoid or relieve the discomfort of mouth sores.

How to Reduce The Risk of Developing Mouth Sores from Chemotherapy

Mouth sores from chemotherapy generally develop a few days after the start of treatment and disappear within a few weeks of stopping, but since chemo often lasts several months, it’s important for patients to boost and strengthen oral health as soon as possible. Reduce the risk of developing mouth sores before starting treatment by doing the following:

  • Visit the dentist to check your teeth and gums for potential issues that may worsen and/or cause pain during chemotherapy.
  • Develop an effective mouth care routine. Your dentist can recommend the right toothbrush, toothpaste,  and mouth rinse that will address a chemo patient’s special needs.
  • Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol; they will exacerbate oral irritation and further dry out the mucous membranes of the mouth.
  • Eat an antioxidant-rich diet (plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables) that will help to boost your immune system.
  • Quit smoking. It’s critical to good oral health under normal circumstances, and even more so during chemotherapy.

How to Treat Mouth Sores from Chemo During Treatment

If mouth sores erupt during chemotherapy, effective treatment for minimizing the pain includes:

  • Choose foods carefully. Limit the amount of alcohol consumed and avoid foods that are spicy, acidic, sharp, crunchy and overly hot or cold. Soft foods are easiest to eat and the most gentle on sensitive mouths.
  • Use topical painkillers and/or coating agents recommended by a doctor. These may be beneficial in numbing the intensity of mouth pain.

When it comes to treating mouth sores from chemo, choosing the right oral care products can help. Oral care products that are non-irritating and have excellent tissue building and antimicrobial properties can make a difference. The family of highly effective antimicrobial products from Dental Herb Company are formulated to rebuild and condition connective tissue and promote good oral health. These Truly Natural® solutions are made with precisely calculated proportions of pure essential oils that work synergistically with alcohol-free extracts of organically grown herbs to reduce oral bacteria and help maintain healthy teeth and gums—ideal for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Pure essential oil of lavender and vegetable glycerin, both of which are used in all our products, are particularly soothing agents for those suffering from painful mouth sores.

The History of Oral Care: How Did Our Ancestors Try to Prevent Gum Disease?

Ever wonder when our ancestors began to brush their teeth or use toothpaste? Believe it or not, the toothbrush is one of the oldest devices still in use to this day, and it dates back to as early as 3000 B.C. Early Egyptians crafted devices from sticks and frayed the ends to rub against the teeth.1 This tool is the earliest recorded precursor of the toothbrush. Credit for the first “real” toothbrush, however, belongs to the Chinese. In the 1400s they used bamboo to craft the handles of brushes and attached a set of boar bristles for brushing the teeth.2

The popularity of this toothbrush spread to Europe where many Europeans chose to replace the overly abrasive boar bristles with softer horsehairs and even feathers.1 In 1780, the first modern toothbrush was created by William Addis.3 It featured swine bristles which were set through holes into a carved cattle bone handle and secured by wires. It wasn’t until 1938, when DuPont invented nylon, that the truly modern toothbrush as we know it was created.3 Rather than using natural bristles that were generally too harsh on sensitive gum tissue, this new synthetic material was soft, and therefore much gentler. Not only was it easier on the teeth and gums, it was a much more cost-effective option for mass production—especially in combination with plastic handles. By the 1950s, these toothbrushes became the new standard which, with relatively minor design refinements, remains in place today.

The Evolution of Toothpaste

Ancient Egyptians are credited with creating the very first forms of toothpaste. One was made with rock salt, mint, dried iris flowers and pepper crushed together into a powder that, when mixed with saliva, would clean and whiten teeth.2 Another documented tooth-cleaning powder was comprised of ashes from oxen hooves, myrrh, egg shells and pumice4. As unappetizing as these concoctions may sound, it is interesting to note that ancient Egyptians understood that effective tooth cleaning required abrasion.

The Romans and the Greeks used ingredients such as crushed bones and oyster shells in their tooth-cleaning powders. In an attempt to make their tooth-cleaning powders more palatable and more effective at combating bad breath, Romans added powdered bark and charcoal to their formulations.8 The Chinese and Indians were also creating tooth-cleaning powders at around 500 B.C. The Chinese added ginseng and herbal mints to their powders for flavor.9 Use of these tooth-cleaning powders continued until the 1800s when people began experimenting with new additives, such as soap10. In the 1850s, the first actual toothpaste was sold to consumers in jars. By 1873, it was mass-produced by Colgate.11

Today, there are seemingly endless varieties of toothpaste available to appeal to different consumer preferences while helping people to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. The array of toothpastes consumers can choose from is enough to make one’s head spin: sensitivity protection, cavity protection, tartar control, plaque control, gum defense, enamel protection, enamel repair, multi-protection, whitening power, night protection, and clinical-strength. Not only do the varieties offer specific purposes, they also come in different consistencies—pastes, gels, liquid gels and even paste/gel combinations. In addition, consumers must decide between varieties that boast the addition or omission of various ingredients. There are toothpastes with mouthwash, baking soda, or peroxide added. Many of these are formulated with alcohol and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). In 2011, there were 353 varieties of toothpaste offered by retailers12. So, when it comes to choosing something that plays such a crucial role in the treatment of gum disease,  how do we know what to choose?

How A Healthy Diet and Natural Toothpaste Team Up For Better Oral Health

Poor dietary choices deplete the body of vitamins and minerals, which are the foundation of overall well-being. Proper nutrition makes it possible for the body to create new tissue and heal wounds. Without these building blocks, the body breaks down healthy tissue and muscle in order to heal. In addition, good nutrition is imperative for the immune system to function properly and fight off infection. The mineral most likely to be deficient in the average diet is calcium, which is key to the health of bones and teeth. Without adequate calcium, the body will take it from non-vital areas such as the jawbone.1 Once the bones that are responsible for supporting teeth begin to weaken, the risk of developing periodontal disease increases substantially. Consequently,  protecting one’s oral health begins with improving one’s diet.

It is a common misconception that all oral bacteria are unhealthy. Between 500 to 1000 species of bacteria have been identified in the human mouth and there are between 100 and 200 varieties present in the mouth at all times. While some are harmful, most oral bacteria actually help to prevent disease.2 Gum disease is not caused by the mere presence of bacteria; it is caused by inflammation that accompanies rapidly breeding bacteria. While proper oral care and regular visits to the dentist are key steps in controlling bacterial growth, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is just as important in boosting your body’s ability to fight off all types of infection. Choosing organic foods over processed foods and choosing natural ingredients over chemical alternatives are healthy lifestyle choices. Likewise, choosing herbal toothpastes and mouth rinses with all natural ingredients rather than chemically based products with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and other additives, is the healthiest choice you can make for your teeth and gums.

Improving Your Diet And Lifestyle Is Much Simpler Than You Might Think

If more people made lifestyle choices based on the philosophy of “you are what you eat”,  it is likely that the number of people living with heart disease, Type-2 diabetes, obesity and cancer would be significantly lower. We live in a fast-paced society that chooses convenience over quality. We eat fast food and frozen meals because it is quicker than taking the time to make meals from scratch. The problem with these convenient and cheap foods is that they are cheating us out of our health by offering us next-to-nothing when it comes to the nutrients that our bodies need to remain strong. A diet that is dominated by foods containing white flour, saturated fat, preservatives, additives, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners and residual pesticides could have a negative impact on our current and future health.

The human body is not designed to efficiently process chemically treated foods. Furthermore, our bodies absorb the chemicals found in many personal hygiene products, and after years of exposure to these toxins there can be adverse cumulative effects. Improving your health is easy with just a few simple steps:

  • Choose organic and locally-grown foods because these are grown without the use of pesticides or herbicides, and buying organic helps to support local farmers and economies.
  • Limit the amount of prepackaged and processed foods that you consume.
  • Exercise. Regular exercise lowers blood pressure, reduces cholesterol, reduces the amount of triglycerides in the bloodstream, reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke and Type-2 diabetes, and boosts immune function.
  • Choose natural health and beauty products, such as SLS free toothpaste and botanical shampoo and lotions to minimize the amount of chemicals that are absorbed into the body through the mouth and skin.

Can Your Diet Help Prevent Periodontal Disease?

It’s a misconception that taking care of your oral health simply means practicing good hygiene habits. While it is true that regular brushing and flossing in combination with routine professional cleanings are of utmost importance, the health of your teeth and gums involves much more. Your gums are a reliable reflection of your overall health, and they suffer if there are any nutritional deficiencies in your diet. When considering the best course of action to fight off periodontal disease, get to the root of the problem by adopting a whole body approach.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key to allowing your bodily systems to thrive. When everything is functioning as it should, your natural defenses against all forms of illness and inflammation are substantially strengthened. Healthy gum tissue is less likely to allow penetration of gingivitis-causing bacteria. Adhering to a well-balanced diet is one of the best things you can do to help ensure exceptional oral health.

Natural Treatment for Periodontal Disease

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that assists in repairing connective tissue and regenerating bone—both of which are important to gum health. A deficiency of vitamin C is sometimes linked to the development of periodontal disease. A study in the Journal of Periodontology showed just how important this vitamin is to oral health. Researchers examined 12,419 American adults and found that those who consumed less than the daily recommended value (60mg/day) of Vitamin C were one-and-a-half times more likely to develop severe gingivitis than those who consumed more than 180mg per day.1

Vitamin D is another nutrient that is crucial to good oral health because of its anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers at Boston University looked at the correlation between vitamin D intake and gingivitis and found that those with higher levels of vitamin D in their blood were less susceptible to developing gum inflammation.2

The antioxidant coenzyme Q10 is another beneficial nutrient to have in your diet, and it is primarily found in fish, meat, and in the germs of whole grains. A study from Osaka University in Japan provided evidence that a deficiency of the antioxidant coenzyme Q10 in the diet could be a contributing factor in the development of periodontal disease. The three-week study examined the effects of applying a topical coenzyme Q10 on gum tissue and demonstrated reductions in both inflammation and infection.3

It is clear that a diet rich in antioxidants is beneficial for a healthy mouth, but it is also important to make sure to get plenty of whole grains and calcium. Whole-grain foods are believed to play a role in the prevention of periodontal disease by reducing the overall amount of bodily inflammation.4  Calcium is critical in strengthening bone mass below the gum line and reducing the amount of decay caused by bacteria. Conversely, inadequate levels of dietary calcium cause periodontal disease to worsen.5

Dietary guidelines and tips that can boost your oral health and help prevent periodontal disease

  • Consume plenty of foods rich in vitamin C
  • Increase your intake of organic vegetables
  • Choose whole-grain products over those made with white flour
  • Get plenty of calcium, either through low-fat dairy products or dark, leafy greens
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid sodas and sugary drinks
  • Brush your teeth and floss at least twice a day
  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco products
  • Choose all-natural oral care products over commercial brands

Consuming a well-balanced diet in conjunction with good hygiene habits is the best choice when it comes to natural treatment for periodontal disease. A well-balanced diet equips your body with the tools that it needs to effectively fight against infection and inflammation throughout the body, including in your mouth. All-natural oral care products like those made by Dental Herb Company are another important tool in the fight against periodontal disease. Dental Herb Company products are made from the highest quality essential oils and herbal extracts, and proven to be effective in maintaining optimal oral health. Integrate these natural oral care solutions into your healthier lifestyle and see what a difference choosing the natural path can make.

What’s Wrong with an Alcohol-Based Mouthwash?

The most frequent reason people use an alcohol-based mouthwash is to eliminate bad breath. Ironically, an alcohol-based mouthwash is actually highly ineffective, and even counterproductive, when it comes to long-term treatment of bad breath. While alcohol-based mouthwash products may kill germs in the short term, the high alcohol content reduces the amount of saliva in your mouth, which ultimately makes bad breath worse. Saliva’s primary job is to flush out potentially harmful bacteria making it difficult for the bacteria to stick to your teeth and gums. Saliva is critical to oral health. Without adequate saliva, bad breath will result, while the risk for developing gum disease and cavities increases significantly.

What makes a natural mouth rinse a better choice?

Choosing Dental Herb Company’s alcohol-free mouth rinse over one that is alcohol-based is more effective as a long-term therapy for bad breath and optimal oral health because Tooth & Gums Tonic® contains essential oils with powerful antimicrobial qualities for treating the underlying cause rather than merely providing temporary relief. Alcohol-free mouthwashes—also called mouth rinses and tonics—help to maintain the natural balance of saliva. This “balance” is critical not only for breaking down starches and flushing out bacteria, but also for assisting in the body’s natural digestive process. In addition, alcohol dries out the mucous membranes of the mouth, which can exacerbate bleeding gums and lead to increased tooth and gum sensitivity. Natural mouth rinses containing essential oils and herbal extracts can provide antimicrobial and connective tissue rebuilding properties, which can substantially strengthen your healing abilities and overall oral health. Essential oils have long been recommended for their therapeutic benefits in dental care because they help prevent infection, bad breath, and gum disease without the harmful side effects that are associated with commercial mouthwashes.

Natural herbal mouth rinse products are a safe, effective alternative!

A 2008 study published in the Australian Dental Journal suggested a possible link between the use of alcohol-based mouthwash products and certain oral cancers. Although the study was inconclusive, it drew consumer concern and confusion regarding the safety of alcohol-based mouthwashes. Nonetheless, almost all commercial brand mouthwashes sold in major retail outlets contain significant amounts of alcohol—some as much as 26.9%. While the health risks associated with alcohol-based mouthwashes are not clear, an alcohol and chemical free mouth rinse is less irritating to sensitive gums and tissue, and has proven to be more effective alternative.

Dental Herb Company’s Tooth & Gums Tonic® is a professional strength, alcohol-free mouth rinse. This all-natural oral rinse is an integrated part of a proven system for optimal oral health. Dental Herb Company’s family of professional strentgh antimicrobial are formulated to freshen breath and promote good oral health. Made with precisely calculated proportions of pure essential oils that work synergistically with alcohol-free extracts of organically grown herbs, these Truly Natural products reduce oral bacteria while helping to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Holistic Dentistry: Natural Treatment for Periodontal Disease

Over the past decade, consumer interest in choosing natural alternative medicines and therapies has grown substantially. Holistic dentistry, also known as natural dentistry, is one area in particular that has become more popular. If you’re wondering whether holistic dentistry is the right choice for treating your periodontal disease, here’s what you need to know.

The main principle of holistic dentistry is to treat the patient as a whole, rather than just as a set of teeth. For example, the focus is not solely on the treatment of the symptoms of gingivitis and periodontal disease, but on the treatment of the underlying causes of the symptoms. By examining these underlying causes, symptoms can be eliminated in a way that is natural and minimally invasive.

Holistic dentists see all parts of the body as interconnected, and they believe that if an imbalance exists in one part of the body, it can lead to health problems in other parts. In short, oral health is connected to your overall health.  For example, numerous scientific studies have shown that inflammation caused by periodontal disease increases your risk for developing degenerative diseases like heart disease, diabetes and cancer1. Holistic dentists (also known as natural dentists) examine the diet and lifestyle of their patients, and explain to them how unwise choices can negatively impact the health of their teeth and gums. When it comes to treatment for periodontal disease, the goal of holistic dentistry is not to find a quick fix, but to promote preventative care along with a balanced diet to ensure long lasting oral health.

Holistic dentistry minimizes the amount of potentially harmful chemicals that we put into our body, such as the filling material in our teeth, chemicals found in commercial oral care products, and the food that we consume. These chemical additives can have a negative cumulative effect of which most individuals are largely unaware. Holistic dental treatments, proper daily oral hygiene, the use of all natural products, and a commitment to a healthy diet can all help to prevent periodontal disease.

Is There a Natural Treatment for Gum Disease?

The majority of dental researchers agree that gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection, and the body’s natural inflammatory response is responsible for causing damage to the soft tissue and bone in the mouth. Inflammation is a critical part of the body’s self-defense system, as it sends out cells and chemicals that start the process of repairing and healing the underlying infection, injury or disease. However, when there is chronic inflammation, such as in the case of gum disease, it begins to work against the body.

Over the past century, dental care has primarily emphasized treatment of existing gum disease through the use of systemic antibiotics and antimicrobial mouthwashes. While effective on a short-term basis, the eventual result is that our bodies develop a resistance to the antibiotics found in our mouth care products. The good news is that we have other options available to us that are just as effective in helping to prevent and treat gum disease that are 100% natural.

Essential oils extracted from plants have been used for centuries to treat a wide variety of medical ailments. There have been a surge of clinical research studies exhibiting the beneficial and powerful effects that essential oils can have on our health, and the field of dentistry has begun to shift its focus accordingly toward natural oral care alternatives. Research has shown that microorganisms, like those found in the mouth that contribute to gum disease, “do not appear to develop tolerance or resistance to the antibacterial effects of essential oils”1 and that their power as antimicrobial agents does not weaken over time.

Dental Herb Company offers all natural oral hygiene products that use precisely calculated proportions of the highest quality pure essential oils and botanicals to help maintain healthy teeth and gums. These unique product formulations, which took over two decades to perfect, were developed by a dentist with advanced education and training in therapeutic herbology and holistic health. Available through dental offices and online, this family of all natural oral care solutions comprises of Tooth & Gums Tonic®, Tooth & Gums Essentials Toothpaste®, PerioSpot Gel®, Under the Gums Irrigant® and Tooth & Gums Spritz®. The extraordinary effectiveness of Dental Herb Company products is due to the unique way in which they are formulated. The products work most effectively in the prevention and treatment of gum diseases when combined with daily oral hygiene maintenance including flossing, brushing, and rinsing along with regular dental exams and cleanings.

What causes gum disease to worsen?

Gum disease is a major cause of tooth loss in adults, but it is typically avoidable by simply practicing proper oral hygiene and getting regular professional dental care. Gum disease is the result of a bacterial infection caused by plaque buildup that irritates and destroys the gum tissue and damages the bones that support the teeth. As plaque continues to build up, it forms a hard substance called tartar, which further exacerbates gum inflammation and deterioration. There are many other factors which can contribute to the severity of gum disease, such as diabetes, smoking, poor diet, certain medications, poor oral hygiene and even pregnancy.2

There are several stages of gum disease, and in order to prevent each one from worsening it is imperative to treat it accordingly and in a timely manner. The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, and the symptoms are mild and include red, puffy and bleeding gums during brushing or flossing. At this stage the bone that holds the teeth is still healthy, and a professional cleaning will reverse tissue damage. The next stage of gum disease is called periodontitis, when the gums begin to detach from the teeth, pockets form, and damage to the underlying bone begins to occur. Once pockets have formed, plaque begins to accumulate there, making it very difficult to control further tooth and gum decay. In its most advanced stage, gum disease can completely destroy the underlying bone resulting in tooth loss.

Prevention is the best treatment for gum disease, and neglecting to practice proper dental care, including regular dental exams, carries very serious, and very real, consequences.

Is reversing gum disease possible through the use of herbal products?

Regardless of the stage of gum disease one is experiencing, the most important factor when it comes to keeping it in check is to regularly visit a dentist who can remove plaque and tartar buildup, help to repair existing damage and reduce the risk of future damage. No dental care product can replace the necessity for regular professional cleanings, but there are major advantages to cleaning your teeth and gums with natural herbal alternatives in between visits.

What is Gingivitis? And How to Treat Gingivitis Naturally

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums that is caused by plaque buildup around the teeth, and though it is not destructive, it is still considered to be the precursor to gum disease (periodontitis). Practicing proper dental care and regularly visiting the dentist are necessary in order to prevent this oral condition from progressing into one that can be detrimental to the overall health of your gums and teeth.

The bacteria in plaque convert carbohydrates from the food that we eat into acid that can lead to cavities and gum irritation, and so it is imperative to brush, rinse and floss regularly in order to remove the food particles and plaque that is hiding between your teeth. Irritation caused by plaque can cause the gums to become red, swollen, and sore and sometimes even bleed, and if left untreated, gingivitis can continue to advance to serious stages of periodontal disease. Not only can gum disease cause uncomfortable and unsightly symptoms, many researchers, including those from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, believe that there is a strong connection between poor oral health and heart disease.1

The Dental Herb Company offers an effective, all natural way to reduce oral bacteria and maintain healthy teeth and gums. The family of powerful antimicrobial products is comprised of five different mouth care products that contain precisely calculated formulations of pure essential oils and organically-grown herbs that research has proven to have antimicrobial, tissue conditioning, connective tissue rebuilding and anti-halitosis abilities.2 The integrated herbal protocol is most effective when combined with regular flossing and dental hygiene maintenance. When practiced as directed, this method of therapeutic and preventative oral therapy can reduce the buildup of destructive microorganisms that can lead to gum disease.

What you should know about natural treatment for gingivitis

You can reverse gingivitis with the help of a dental professional and good oral care at home, so if you are experiencing symptoms such as red, swollen or bleeding gums, you can rest assured that, with a little dedication, it is a relatively simple fix.

The treatment for gingivitis consists of removing existing plaque and reducing the amount of oral bacteria so that it does not accumulate and lead to further inflammation. There is growing evidence that choosing a natural treatment plan is the healthiest and most effective way of controlling microorganisms that impair oral health. Using natural oral care products is just as important as maintaining a healthy diet when it comes to contributing to our overall health. Each time we brush our teeth, we ingest small amounts of the ingredients in our toothpaste, and many commercial toothpastes are loaded with additives that are potentially dangerous. Most toothpaste contains fluoride, triclosan, and sodium lauryl sulfate, which are all ingredients that are far from benign. Triclosan is an antibiotic and antimicrobial agent that can not only lead to bacterial resistance, but negatively impact thyroid hormone concentrations as well.3 Sodium lauryl sulfate is added to create the foaming action that we associate with toothpaste, but it can dry out the protective mucous lining of the mouth and cause canker sores.4

It is no secret that continuous and frequent exposure to antibiotics of any kind can easily result in an increased bacterial resistance and decreased efficacy, and this fact holds true when it comes to regular toothpaste. Natural tooth care products, such as those produced by Dental Herb Company are notable not only for of their lack of toxic chemicals, but because research has shown that microorganisms do not seem to develop a tolerance or resistance to the antibacterial effects of essential oils.5

What Causes Gingivitis and What are the Telltale Symptoms?

Gingivitis, caused by plaque buildup around the teeth, is the mildest form of gum disease, and gum disease is easily reversible with proper oral care at home and with regular professional cleanings. Healthy gums are pink, firm and they don’t bleed, so if your gums are redder and puffier than normal and they bleed during brushing and/or flossing, there is a high probability that you have gingivitis. Recent research released by the Journal of Dental Research estimates that 47 percent of Americans aged 30 and older has some form of gum disease.1 If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into more serious forms of gum disease that have the potential to result in irreversible damage, such as tooth loss.

You should make an appointment with your dentist to have your teeth cleaned and checked if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Bright red, reddish-purple or shiny gums
  • Gums that are sore to the touch
  • Persistent bad breath that does not go away
  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
  • Mouth sores

Dentists are best able to remove the plaque buildup that causes gum inflammation, and in combination with good oral care habits like regular brushing and flossing in between visits, you can easily prevent gingivitis from progressing to periodontal disease. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to the more serious stages of periodontal disease. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that flossing is enough, although its importance in gum health is invaluable. Even if your teeth are sparkling after you brush, there are still decaying food particles and plaque forming at the gum line that are not visible to the naked eye. Daily brushing, rinsing and flossing are the only way that you can ensure you are removing these bacteria in order to prevent the gum tissue from becoming inflamed. In addition to this daily dental hygiene regimine, consider using a natural treatment for gingivitis, such as the Tooth & Gums System offered by Dental Herb Company. All Dental Herb Company products are blended with precise formulations of the purest essential oils and alcohol-free extracts of organically grown herbs, and have been proven to reduce oral bacteria and provide long lasting results.

Oral health care and natural alternatives for the treatment of gingivitis

In the 1890s, fluoride was first added to toothpaste for its cavity fighting abilities, though its popularity in mouth care products did not become apparent until the 1950s.2 Since that time, studies on fluoride have revealed that it is a highly toxic additive that carries with it a laundry list of negative potential health consequences such as arthritis, gastrointestinal effects, brain effects, kidney disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, endocrine disruption and acute toxicity.3 Despite this, fluoride is still used in most commercial oral care products, as well as a variety of other toxins such as sodium lauryl sulfate, triclosan, food dyes and artificial sweeteners. Improving your oral health at the expense of your overall well being is counterproductive. Natural oral care products such as those offered by Dental Herb Company are a safe and healthy choice for consumers.

When it comes to natural oral care products, some might believe that they aren’t as effective as their alternatives. Some might feel that chemicals are essential in order to properly clean, and that natural products are just not potent enough. The truth of the matter is that modern clinical research has demonstrated the antimicrobial benefits of essential oils and organically grown herbs such as those used in Dental Herb Company products.

The most effective ways to reverse gingivitis and prevent periodontitis

Dental Herb Company natural oral care products contain essential oils and herbs that help fight oral bacteria and maintain a healthy, good-looking smile. Many studies have shown that our bodies naturally develop a resistance to antibiotics when there is frequent exposure and overuse. This natural resistance to antibiotics includes those found in commercial toothpaste as well. The good news is that microorganisms do not appear to develop a resistance or tolerance to the antibacterial effects of essential oils.4 Not only are natural oral care products an effective gingivitis remedy compared with other over-the-counter options, their antimicrobial qualities, in combination with their aromatic scent and structure make them a better choice as a long-lasting remedy for bad breath.5 Whereas most products contain alcohol, which can dry out the mouth, Dental Herb Company products use oils which cling to damaged tissue and promote healing.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Facts About What Causes Periodontal Disease: The Most Common Risk Factors

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a chronic inflammation of the gums that is caused by a buildup of bacteria-laden plaque that irritates the gum tissue. The mildest form of periodontal disease is gingivitis which, if left untreated, can eventually result in the development of periodontitis—the most serious form of gum disease and the leading cause of tooth loss in adults 35 and older.1 The most common risk factors for developing this disease2 are:

  • A family history of periodontal disease
  • Hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy, menstruation, puberty and menopause
  • Illnesses and diseases that interfere with proper immune functioning such as diabetes
  • Poor lifestyle habits, such as maintaining an unhealthy diet, smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Improper daily oral care and neglecting to have regular professional cleanings
  • Certain medications that reduce the amount of saliva in the mouth

When not treated properly, toxins that are produced by plaque, in combination with the body’s constant inflammatory response, can lead to a breakdown of the connective and bone tissue that are responsible for holding the teeth in place to the point where the gum tissue and bone can become irrevocably damaged.

The good news is that the best treatment for periodontal disease is prevention—and it’s simply a matter of practicing good habits when it comes to your oral hygiene. Dental Herb Company offers oral care products made with the highest quality pure essential oils and organic herbs instead of the harsh chemicals found in most oral care products. When used as an integrated herbal protocol along with regular flossing and dental hygiene maintenance, Dental Herb Company products help fight bacteria that can cause gingivitis and lead to more serious gum diseases. If your gums are more red and puffy than normal or you have noticed bleeding when brushing or flossing, the Dental Herb products can help to reduce bacteria and prevent periodontal disease from progressing.

How natural treatment for periodontal disease plays a key role in a healthy lifestyle

There are many health benefits to using natural dental care products over commercial varieties, and consumers are increasingly becoming aware of this fact and making the switch. Herbal mouth care products are made from ingredients that are naturally occurring rather than those that are produced in a laboratory. Studies have shown that since microorganisms do not develop a tolerance to the antibacterial effects of the essential oils used in herbal toothpastes and mouth rinses, they are even more effective in preventing tooth decay and periodontal disease than commercial toothpaste that relies on toxic antibiotics like triclosan to kill germs.

The increase in consumer demand for organic and natural products has now extended beyond dietary staples and into the dental care aisle. People are looking for additional ways in which they can eliminate artificial ingredients and chemicals from their diets, and changing their brand of toothpaste is an effective way to limit toxins that have the potential to have long-term negative accumulative effects on the body. The majority of commercial toothpastes contain fluoride because of its cavity-fighting properties, but it can be highly toxic in large doses, especially for young children. In fact, in 2009 there were over 23,000 calls to poison control regarding fluoride toxicity from toothpaste.3 These toothpastes also contain the detergent sodium lauryl sulfate, which damages the protective mucous lining of your mouth and can exacerbate bad breath and lead to canker sores. In addition, many of the artificial dyes and sweeteners that are added to these over-the-counter oral care products have been linked to behavioral and other health problems.4

Of course, one of the last places you’d expect to find pesticides, cancer-causing chemicals, and toxic additives that have been linked to the development of Alzheimer’s disease is in your medicine cabinet. Sadly, all of these toxins and questionable additives are found in the majority of commercial toothpaste brands5. You brush your teeth with the intention of keeping your teeth and gums healthy, but while you are doing this, are you exposing your body to a cocktail of toxins? The potential for long-term consequences that can result from an accumulation of these chemicals is cause for concern and reason enough to make the switch to 100% natural tooth care products.

Prevent periodontal disease by paying attention to the warning signs and practicing proper oral care

In order to fight gingivitis and prevent it from worsening, it is imperative that you brush, rinse and floss your teeth regularly in order to reduce the amount of plaque build up under the gum line. One of the best ways to boost your oral hygiene routine is to use natural products, such as those made by Dental Herb Company.
